"Lo Malli, innondu
90 haako bega, ide ivattu avlige!!! "(hay Malli, give 90 more, she
is gonna get it today!!) Shouted Ravi from a table in the backside of the bar.
"Sumkiranna yake daily ayammange golu hoykontiya" (leave it bro, why
do you torture her daily) said innocent Malli, the bartender who knew Ravi for
many years now. It was a regular
practice for Ravi to drink at Malli's bar, go home and harass his wife as much
as possible both physically and mentally everyday for nearly 15 years.
He would
hit her de way he wants for every silly thing in de world. He would abuse
her de way he wants for every move of her. It had become even worse when he had
physically tortured his wife on his own daughter's marriage in front of everyone.
His wife was almost dead mentally but had survived all these years for the sake
of her children.
Bhagyamma a 42 year old
lady usually woke up at 6
am and would go to her farm, work for an hour and return back
with fortunes like coconuts, vegetables and few others things. As she
had a cute daughter, she would cook for her and send her to school with lunch
boxes prepared. Once the kid leaves, she would go back to farm again and work till
evening. She was doing the same for almost 15 years now. Her husband never cared the farm or anything except that he would make money out of it when needed and gave very less money to family and enjoy his life with the rest.
On
one GOOD day, as usual Ravi went to bar, got drunk by evening, shouted at
Malli and started back to home. It was almost 9 'o clock in the night;
Ravi had lost his control but still managed to ride his bike back home. As soon
as he was entering the gates, the great mother and an unlucky wife Bhagyamma heard a
loud sound outside her house. She came outside running to see her husband Ravi
lying on the floor with bike on him. She was terrified by the sight and helped him to stand
up. Before she lifted him up, he shouted "le neene kane nange
shapa hakirodu, ivattu ninna saysine naanu hogodu" (Hay you have
cursed me for which I fell and I am going to kill you today for sure) He
pulled her inside, pushed her to the wall, took a belt hanging on the wall and started
hitting her with all force he could gather.
Bhagyamma neither
reacted nor uttered a single word and not even a drop of tear came out.
She had waited for 15 years, her struggles never ended, her poojas never
worked, her prayers were never answered by the unseen gods. She had no option
but to kill herself. He was still continuing to hit her but at one moment she
decided that she wants to live and she will fight for the sake of her
daughters, she will fight for the sake of her respect, she will fight for the
sake of answers she searched for 15 years.
Next moment she pushed him
out of the house for which Ravi fell rolling on the floor. She then took a huge stone
lying on the ground and threw it straight on his head. She sat all the
night outside, she didn't cry nor she didn't shout and she was determined to
face the jail for the mistake of marrying a drunkard who would harass her to
prove that he is a man. She had hit back and the next moment Ravi was out of
her life.15 years of her torture had come to an end. She had just killed her
only witness who tortured her for life. For people it was a murder, for media
it became news, for police it was a crime but for Bhagyamma it was the answer
for her problems. She was arrested but she dared and agreed that she killed her
husband. In our India there
are no rules written to protect the sacrifice of a mother who took the
unbearable pain almost every day for the sake of her daughter and lived with the
monster for 15 long years. But in the same India there is lot of moral support and resource to overcome these hurdles to help all the troubled women out there.
Women are the most beautiful super-creatures created by god. Dear super creatures, bring out the super woman in you and fight this evil. Be it rape, be it harassment or be it abuse, fight back and there are sensible men out there to stand by you and support. Never sacrifice your life and never
bear physical harassment. Come out and report it before it takes you over and
you lose the battle. Punish the men who do it and punish the way he should be
punished rather than getting yourself caught in the nest of legal rules and
regulations. Let the honesty and truth prevail before the rules and regulations
act their part.
PS: This article is
written based on my findings on an incident nearby my village few years back
and there are no intentions of questioning the legal system.Imagination has played its part as well. But this article
is written to encourage women to fight against any form of physical harassment legally
as early as possible with courage.
